American Bully vs Pitbull — What Is the Difference
American Bully vs Pitbull — Are They the Same Dog
The american bully vs pitbull question is one of the most common in the bull breed world — and the confusion is understandable. Both breeds look similar, share ancestry, and are frequently mistaken for each other by the general public. But they are different dogs with different histories, different structures, and different temperament emphases.
The short answer: the American Bully descended from the American Pit Bull Terrier but was selectively bred in a different direction to produce a more compact, heavier, calmer companion dog. After 30 to 40 years of separate development they are meaningfully different animals.
The American Pit Bull Terrier
The American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) is a working breed with a long athletic history in America — originally used for farm work, hunting, weight pulling, and dog sports. The APBT is recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC) but not the American Kennel Club. It is a medium-sized, lean, athletic dog bred for high drive, tenacity, and endurance.
The American Bully
The American Bully was developed beginning in the 1980s by crossing American Pit Bull Terriers and American Staffordshire Terriers with various bulldog breeds to create a companion dog. The breeding goal was specifically to reduce prey drive, reduce dog aggression, and produce a more moderate energy level — while retaining and amplifying the physical presence of the bull breeds. Recognized by the ABKC in 2004 and the UKC in 2013.

Are American Bullies and Pitbulls Both Aggressive
No — both breeds are known for strong human affiliation when properly bred and socialized. The “dangerous breed” reputation both carry is driven by media coverage of individual incidents, breed misidentification (many dogs called “pit bull” in media reports are actually mixed breeds or entirely different breeds), and the historical association with dog fighting.
The American Bully breed standard explicitly disqualifies human-aggressive dogs. The APBT standard specifically states the breed should never be aggressive toward humans. Aggression in either breed is the result of poor breeding, inadequate socialization, abuse, or neglect — not a breed characteristic.
Can You Tell Them Apart
An experienced eye can tell a well-bred American Bully from an APBT at a glance — the Bully’s extreme width, compact structure, and heavy bone are distinct from the leaner, more athletic APBT build. However, many mixed-breed dogs and poorly bred dogs exist on a continuum between the two types making visual identification unreliable without pedigree documentation.
