American Bully Sizes — Overview
American bully sizes span from the tiny Micro at under 13 inches to the massive XXL that can exceed 23 inches and 150 pounds. The breed is officially divided into size classes by the American Bully Kennel Club (ABKC) based on height at the withers — and each class has distinct structural characteristics beyond just size.

American Bully Sizes — Official ABKC Classes
Pocket American Bully
The smallest officially recognized ABKC class. Pocket Bullies stand under 17 inches for males and under 16 inches for females at the withers. Despite their compact size they carry the same heavy bone, wide chest, and muscular build as larger classes. The Pocket is the second-most popular class after XL due to its manageable size combined with the impressive Bully structure.
Standard American Bully
The original ABKC registered class from which all others were developed. Standard males stand 17 to 20 inches, females 16 to 19 inches. The Standard represents the balanced middle ground of the breed — more muscular than the Classic, less extreme than XL, and considered by many the truest expression of the breed’s intended conformation.
Classic American Bully
Uses the same height measurements as the Standard but has a lighter body frame with less overall mass. The Classic is the leaner, more athletic expression of the breed — same height as Standard but without the extreme muscle mass and bone density. Less common in the current market where extreme mass is typically preferred.
XL American Bully
Males stand over 20 inches, females over 19 inches at the withers. The XL is the most popular American Bully size class by a significant margin — demand for XL dogs consistently exceeds supply from quality breeders. XL Bullies combine the impressive size of a large dog with the characteristic wide chest, heavy bone, and compact body of the breed.
XXL American Bully
Not an officially recognized ABKC class — XXL is a market and breeding community term for dogs that exceed the XL height standard significantly. XXL Bullies typically stand 22 inches or taller with proportionally greater bone density and body mass than XL dogs. The most extreme XL American Bully size class and the most challenging to produce correctly.

Height at the withers — the highest point of the shoulders — is the official measurement that determines ABKC size class. Weight is not used for class determination. A dog that weighs 90 pounds but stands under 17 inches is a Pocket class dog, not an XL.

How to Determine Your Dog’s Size Class
Measure height at the withers (top of the shoulder blades) with the dog standing naturally on a level surface. Use a measuring stick or tape measure held perpendicular to the ground. Measure at 18 to 24 months of age for the most accurate adult measurement — American Bullies continue growing in height until 12 to 16 months and continue building body mass until 18 to 24 months.
