Adult Feeding Schedule

Adult American Bullies should eat two meals per day — morning and evening with approximately 10 to 12 hours between meals. This prevents bloat (gastric dilatation-volvulus), maintains stable blood sugar, and makes stool monitoring easier. Never free feed an adult American Bully.

What to Look For in American Bully Food

Protein

Named meat as the first ingredient is non-negotiable. Chicken, beef, salmon, turkey, or lamb should appear first on the label. Avoid foods where the first ingredient is a grain, corn, or “animal protein” without a species specified.

Fat Content

Moderate fat — 10 to 16 percent — is appropriate for most American Bullies. Higher fat formulas can be useful for working dogs or dogs being built up after illness. Lower fat is appropriate for sedentary or overweight dogs.

Ingredients to Avoid

• Corn syrup and sweeteners
• Artificial colors (Red 40, Yellow 5, Blue 2)
• Artificial preservatives (BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin)
• Soy protein
• Generic “meat meal” or “animal fat” without species specified

Body Condition Scoring — Are You Feeding the Right Amount

The most accurate way to assess whether your feeding amounts are correct is body condition scoring. You should be able to feel the ribs easily without pressing hard — but not see them from a standing position. A slight waist tuck when viewed from above indicates correct weight. No visible waist tuck and you cannot feel the ribs means the dog is overweight.

Adjust portions in 0.25 cup increments and reassess every two weeks. Weight changes slowly in large breeds — give adjustments 4 to 6 weeks before making further changes.

• Fish oil — omega-3 fatty acids for coat, skin, and joint health. 1,000mg per 20 lbs of body weight daily.
• Glucosamine and chondroitin — joint support, especially important for XL and XXL dogs over 5 years old.
