American Bully Health Problems — What Every Owner Should Know

American Bully Health Problems — Overview

American bully health problems are largely manageable when buyers purchase from responsible breeders who health test their breeding stock. Many of the most serious conditions affecting the breed — hip dysplasia, cardiac disease, hereditary eye conditions — have a strong genetic component that responsible breeding can significantly reduce.

Understanding the most common american bully health problems helps owners recognize symptoms early, pursue timely veterinary care, and make informed decisions when choosing a breeder. Dogs from OFA health tested parents have meaningfully lower rates of most hereditary conditions.

Most Common American Bully Health Problems

Hip Dysplasia

The most prevalent orthopedic condition in the breed. Hip dysplasia occurs when the hip joint develops abnormally — the ball of the femur does not sit correctly in the hip socket — causing pain, lameness, and progressive arthritis. Genetic predisposition is the primary risk factor. OFA hip certification of both parents is the most important preventive measure a buyer can take.

Symptoms typically appear between 4 and 18 months of age: bunny hopping gait, reluctance to climb stairs, difficulty rising, reduced activity. Severe cases require surgical intervention. Mild to moderate cases are managed with weight control, joint supplements, controlled exercise, and pain medication as needed.

Elbow Dysplasia

Similar in mechanism to hip dysplasia — abnormal elbow joint development causing pain and progressive arthritis. Symptoms include front leg lameness, reluctance to extend the elbow, and swelling around the joint. OFA elbow certification is the recommended preventive screen.

Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS)

More prevalent in Exotic and Micro class American Bullies with more extreme facial structure. BOAS results from shortened airways — narrowed nostrils (stenotic nares), elongated soft palate, and narrow trachea — causing breathing restriction. Affected dogs overheat easily, snore loudly, gag or retch after eating, and have reduced exercise tolerance. Surgical correction significantly improves quality of life in affected dogs.

Cardiac Conditions

Several inherited cardiac conditions occur in American Bullies including subvalvular aortic stenosis (SAS) and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Both can be fatal without detection and management. OFA cardiac certification by a board-certified cardiologist before breeding is the primary preventive measure. Annual cardiac auscultation is recommended for adult American Bullies.

Skin Disease and Allergies

Atopic dermatitis (environmental allergies) and food allergies are among the most common conditions in the breed. See our detailed American Bully Skin Problems guide for full coverage of causes, symptoms, and treatments.

Hypothyroidism

Underactive thyroid function is relatively common in American Bullies, particularly in middle-aged and older dogs. Symptoms include unexplained weight gain, lethargy, hair loss, skin thickening, and cold intolerance. Diagnosis via blood test, treatment with daily thyroid supplementation — usually very manageable once diagnosed.

Eye Conditions

Cherry eye (prolapsed nictitating membrane gland), entropion (inward-rolling eyelids), and hereditary cataracts occur in the breed. Cherry eye is visible as a red mass in the inner corner of the eye and requires surgical correction. Entropion causes corneal irritation and secondary ulceration if not corrected. OFA eye certification screens for hereditary conditions.

How to Minimize Health Risks When Buying

  • Ask for OFA numbers for both parents and verify on ofa.org
  • Request documentation — not just verbal assurance
  • Avoid any breeder who cannot name the bloodlines of the sire and dam
  • Get a written health guarantee covering genetic conditions
  • Have your own veterinarian examine the puppy within 48 to 72 hours of purchase
